Watermelon Juice Proven to Reduce Muscle Soreness

Sore? Eat some Watermelon.

A recent report in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry has linked watermelon and it’s precence of L-citrulline to decreased muscle soreness and the recovery heart rate after 24 hours*.  The test examined both pasteurized and non-pasteurized sources, with the non-pasteurized yielding stronger results.  The range of L-citrulline provided between the two sources was rather large (1.17g – 6g), so more testing will certainly be done in an effort to find an optimal dosage range for athletes.  Watermelon is a nutrient dense fruit with numerous health benefits and health claims associated with it.  However, with it’s high sugar content, those looking to lose weight would need to incorporate this refreshing fruit into their nutrition plan with caution and calculation.
